Washington, D.C. – The Economic Innovation Group (EIG) today announced that Cal Harris has joined the organization as Director of Communications. Harris will lead EIG’s communications strategy and play a key role in helping the organization advance its agenda at a critical time.

“We are excited to welcome Cal to our growing team at EIG. Cal is a gifted communicator who understands how to reach communities that are often overlooked in the Washington policy discourse,” said EIG President and CEO John Lettieri. “Cal’s experience and passion will help EIG expand its work on behalf of a more dynamic and inclusive American economy.”

“I am excited about the opportunity to work alongside a great team at EIG that is focused on producing solutions to the economic challenges that keep countless Americans up at night,” said Harris. “I believe that preserving and strengthening the American economy deserves an all-hands-on-deck effort. As communities maneuver through this current health and economic crisis, EIG’s work to advance bipartisan policies on behalf of American workers, entrepreneurs, and communities is more relevant than ever.”

Cal previously served as regional communications director for presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg, overseeing the campaign’s Super Tuesday media efforts in Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Minnesota. Prior to the Bloomberg campaign, Cal served as communications strategist for Pine Street Strategies, the Washington, D.C.-based firm that orchestrated historic mayoral wins for Frank Scott, Jr. in Little Rock, Arkansas and Randall Woodfin in Birmingham, Alabama. The firm assisted dozens of mayors across the South on various policy matters and advised on the creation and launch of the Birmingham Inclusive Growth (BIG) Partnership. Cal also worked in the communications shop of the Bipartisan Policy Center and their legislative arm BPC Action.

Mayor Steve Benjamin of Columbia, South Carolina, noted, “Cal understands how to connect the dots between complex policy matters in Washington and the anxieties of everyday Americans on Main Street. He’s passionate about improving the lives and economic well-being of underserved communities, and I look forward to the work that he will accomplish at EIG.”

Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas, added, “Cal is deeply committed to advocating for the people and places that are often left behind. This commitment is reflected in his ability to generate compelling messages that are accessible and responsive to the plight of underserved communities. I am excited for Cal to join EIG because I believe wholeheartedly that small businesses are the lifelines of local communities. The viability of small businesses are directly tied to the growth and prosperity of American cities, and EIG recognizes this.”

“Tackling our nation’s growing economic gap is one of the biggest challenges we face today, and Cal is committed to this fight,” said EIG Vice President Chris Slevin. “As EIG continues to develop new ideas that connect communities with actionable policies to strengthen our economy, I am confident that Cal’s expertise will help magnify the impact and reach of our organization.”
