Housing is central to America’s economic vitality.
It shapes where people live, work, and build their futures. Yet today, a chronic housing shortage has pushed up costs and weakened the foundations of local economies.
EIG’s growing body of work on housing explores how smarter policy can expand opportunity by building more homes in the places where people want to live. This work includes proposals like Right to Build Zones, which would empower states and localities to streamline housing development in high-demand areas. We show how Opportunity Zones, our signature policy, have catalyzed abundant housing growth in the places that most need it. And we assess the strengths and shortcomings of ongoing federal housing reform efforts. Together, these efforts illuminate how modern housing policy can fuel economic dynamism and make thriving communities accessible to more Americans.
