Rep. Pat Tiberi is delving into why the economic recovery has been uneven, with some parts of the country bouncing back while others continue to struggle.
The Genoa Township Republican is the chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, a panel of House members and U.S. senators tasked with reviewing economic conditions and recommending improvements in economic policy.
During a committee hearing today, Tiberi wondered why some parts of the state have recovered, drawing in new business and seeing its unemployment rate drop, while other parts have struggled. Appalachia, for example, continues to be left behind.
John Lettieri, co-founder and senior director for policy and strategy with Economic Innovation Group, a D.C. based advocacy organization that aims to empower entrepreneurs, said regions like Ohio have seen too little “churn,” in the economy, with far too few startups and far too few people moving to find opportunities in different labor markets. He said without turnover, disadvantaged workers suffer the most.
